  • The Canyon Trail in Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge features a number of cactus gardens where large, fleshy cacti present one of the hazards of the otherwise easy trail.

  • Pumphouse Wash, the headwaters of Oak Creek Canyon that drains from the Mogollon Rim, is a deep canyon carved through Coconino Sandstone; the bottom of the canyon is littered with large boulders deposited from the Toroweap Formation above as the sandstone erodes.

  • Behind Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell fills Glen Canyon and its side canyons with water from the Colorado River. At times, this lake is a narrow maze through slickrock country.

  • The desert is a cycle of dry and wet. Most of the year, the deserts of the world are dry, but each has its wet season - be it a monsoon season or snow in winter. During a wet season such as a monsoon, torrential rains are possible; the downpours can be very localized, but very wet with as much as an inch or two of rain falling in a matter of 10 or 20 minutes. When rain like this falls or causes a flash flood full of debris, a deep layer of mud can form in minutes. And, in just a matter of days, that mud can dry and crack and weather into a brittle crust.

At the top of the arch, it is 42 feet thick and 33 feet wide.

  • The Colorado River carves Marble Canyon from the Marble Canyon. The top most layer is Kaibab Limestone giving way to the cliffs of the Toroweap and Coconino Formations. Below that, a slope of Hermit Shale reaches down to the Supai Group, which forms the cliff down to river level.

  • Pumphouse Wash, the headwaters of Oak Creek Canyon that drains from the Mogollon Rim, is a deep canyon carved through the brown and buff colored Coconino Sandstone; the bottom of the canyon is littered with large grey boulders deposited from the Toroweap Formation above as the sandstone erodes. These boulders are swirled with other debris such as downed trees during times of flash flooding leaving behind a stew of rocks and sticks; this stew can find its way into a natural bowl eroded into the sandstone.
