  • The Great Gallery, in the Horseshoe Canyon unit of Canyonlands National Park, is a large panel of Barrier Canyon Style rock art (so named as Horseshoe Canyon was once known as Barrier Canyon and it is here that the style became distinctly recognized). This panel of life-size anthropomorphic figures - the largest of which is over seven feet tall - is nearly 200 feet wide; the figures were painted onto the sandstone wall by the Desert Archaic people (the predecessors to the Fremont and Anasazi) who date back as far as 7,000 BCE on the Colorado Plateau. Though the age of the images of The Great Gallery are unknown, they are thought to be between 2,000 and 4,000 years old.

Though the age of the images of The Great Gallery are unknown, they are thought to be between 2,000 and 4,000 years old. One of The Great Gallery's most recognizable images is the The Ghost, which stands off to one side of the panel along with an entourage of faceless figures. What does The Ghost represent? Whether it be their gods or their ancestors or the spirit world, we will likely never know what it or the rest of the images of this panel meant to their creators.

But not all the pictographs on the panel are so large; there are a number of smaller figures as well as a number of small animal pictograhs...The figures were painted onto the sandstone wall by the Desert Archaic people (the predecessors to the Fremont and Anasazi) who date back as far as 7,000 BCE on the Colorado Plateau. Though the age of the images of The Great Gallery are unknown, they are thought to be between 2,000 and 4,000 years old.

  • Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis) crossed into North America from Siberia, long before humans found their way to the western hemisphere during the last ice age, and populated much of the mountainous western half of the continent from the Canada to Baja California. Once numbering in the millions, the bighorn sheep were much diminished by the 20th century when their numbers dwindled into the thousands...But for the humans that lived on the Colorado Plateau and throughout the desert southwest, the Bighorn Sheep were numerous and likely an important food source as their near ubiquitous appearance in the rock art of the Anasazi, Fremont, and other pre-Columbia Native Americans shows. This panel depicting two Bighorn Sheep is found below Sun's Eye Arch in Monument Valley Tribal Park.
